Terrorism in the American sky - Part II

The third aircraft, a Boeing 757 of United, left Newark NJ and was going to San Francisco as flight UA 93. The terrorists on board tried to crash the airplane into the White House but passengers managed to wrestle the terrorists who took over the controls, the aircraft ended up crashing in Shanksville PA not far from Pittsburgh.
The fourth aircraft, a Boeing 757 of American, left Washington Dulles airport and crashed into the Pentagon. It was going to Los Angeles as flight AA 77. Following that disaster, both airport in the DC area, Reagan and Dulles, were closed for several days.
None of the passengers and crew members survived any of the disasters.

All terrorist on board the four ill fated flights were members of the Al Quaeda network, lead by Osama Ben Laden. After that day, security measures at all airports in the United States were drastically reinforced, with no cutter, scissors, metal knives or any silverware allowed to be carried on board an aircraft, only passengers with tickets to board departing flights would be allowed to proceed to gates, no more visitor allowed in gate areas, passengers would be required to show photo ID several times before boarding, and there would be no more cockpit visit once the aircraft leaves the gate. Some airlines had already taken that measure before 9-11 but now all airlines have taken that measure severely, all cockpit doors are now strongly protected should a passenger try to enter the cockpit in flight.
Threats are now taken very seriously, when you fly don't even think of making a joke about a bomb threat or anything related to that subject. Passengers are no longer allowed to congregate in the aisles, and when using the bathrooms, they can do so only in their respective class of service.

This day also worsened the American economy, the airlines took drastic measures in cutting capacity, trimming fleets, retiring older aircraft sooner than anticipated otherwise, laying off thousands of employees, as well as deferring the deliveries of new aircraft on order. The then president of the Untied States, Georges W Bush, sent US military aircraft in late 2001 to attack a place called Kandahar in Afghanistan, and one year and a half later, Spring of 2003, the war in Iraq began. The price of jet fuel drastically increased in recent years. In the summer of 2008 the price of the oil barrel reached an unbelievable top of over 150 USD but it is now decreasing down to under 100 USD. The airline industry affected by the global economy is expected to re bounce in 2011, the light at the end of the tunnel is in sight.
American Airlines which suffered an economic recession in the first half of the 2000's with the loss of millions of US Dollars, is now slowly recovering after avoiding bankruptcy. It was close to enter Chapter 11 BK protection, but CEO G. Asprey managed to avoid it by taking the drastic measures I mention above. Flying will remain the safest way of traveling for ever.
